St. Joseph Music Foundation

The St. Joseph Music Foundation is about helping each other. Sharing information among members is an important part of the Foundation. To that end, the SJMF presents on-going seminars on topics of interest to its members.

October 2007	October 10, 2007 - Master Class Wednesday 6:00 p.m. Cafe Acoustic 2605 Frederick St. Joseph, MO 816-671-1141	The class will be directed by Anthony Glise, head of the guitar program at Missouri Western and will feature guitarists from the University. The class is free and open to the public. Guitarists from the region are invited to bring their guitars and take advantage of this evening of free lessons and coaching on the instrument and to hear the diverse repertoire performed by the students. If you have never attended a Master Class, you are in for a great time. Bring your instrument or just sit and listen. Those of you who have been before know what it is all about. Great fun for all and lots of information.

November 2007	November 14, 2007 - The Music Business / Career Development Wednesday 6:30 p.m. Cafe Acoustic 2605 Frederick St. Joseph, MO 816-671-1141	Presented by Anthony Glise. This is a "short" version of the class Anthony teaches at Missouri Western State University. The class at the University runs an entire semester so this presentation will be intense. This seminar will cover such topics as copyrights, licensing, contracts, negotiations and performing rights associations such as ASCAP and BMI. This seminar will last approximately 2 hours. January 2008	January 20, 2008 - The Recording Industry Sunday 2:00 pm Missouri Western State University Potter Fine Arts Hall Choir / MultiMedia Room	Presented by Tom Ransom. Tom is one of the leading producers in the country. He is a graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston and also holds a degree in Music Education from the University of Missouri. Tom has worked in the industry for over 25 years. His recordings have received some of the industry's highest awards. February 2008	February 3, 2008 - Ray Alburn Scholarship Fundraiser Sunday 2:00 pm United Ballroom Downtown St. Joseph	In memory of our good friend and mentor, Mr. Ray Alburn, and his passion for music, Kathleen Holeman and the Performing Arts Association have come together to create the Ray Alburn Memorial Scholarship Fund. Fundraising is going on now and will ideally result in our first scholarship to a Spring 2008 graduate.
	February 28, 2008 - The Nova Project Thursday 9:00pm Cafe Acoustic 2605 Frederick St. Joseph, MO 816-617-1141	The Nova Project will perform contemporary music for classical, electric and improvising guitars with 6-string electric 'cello and percussion from their CDs from AME Recordings (Lyon, France). Musicians for this concert are • Anthony Glise — classical guitarist / composer, • Jason Riley — electric / acoustic rock and jazz guitarist, • James Kew — 6-string electric 'cello, • Nick Baker — percussion. This show will be recorded for a live CD release.

April 2008	April 24, 2008 - The Music Business - Part 2 Thursday, April 24, 2008, 7:00 pm Cafe Acoustic 2605 Frederick St. Joseph, MO 816-671-1141	Presented by Debra Fickler. Ms. Fickler is an attorney with the Law Firm of Shughart Thomson & Kilroy in Kansas City. She practices Intellectual Property Law; Patent, Trademark and Copyright Prosecution and related litigation.

June 2008	SJMF Garage Sale FOP Hall 3005 Pear Sunday ONLY June 22, 2008 7:00am to 4:00pm	Anyone interested in donating items for the sale should contact Jill DuBarr at (816) 261- 9875. All items are welcome, however, all donations, including appliances and electronics, must be in good working order. Pickup can be arranged.

July 2008	July 5, 2008 - The National Federation of the Blind Fundraiser "Future Impact" Civic Park St. Joseph, MO. 11:00 am to 11:00 pm Food, games, pony rides, vendors, beer and wine, soft drinks	Annual fundraiser for the benefit of the local chapter of The National Federation of the Blind. This year the St. Joseph Music Foundation has been asked to help in the planning and presentation of a day-long concert in the park. Scheduled to play so far is Pocket Ace, Fillmore Opry, Smilin' Jack, Blackout, Sugar Daddy and Standing on Nines. The Micosay Dancers will also be performing. (The Nova Project, originally schdeuled to perform, will be performing throughout Europe this summer and will not be appearing at "Future Impact".) (M82, also originally scheduled to play, will not be performing.)
	July 23, 2008 - "Cut a Hippy's Hair" Foster Martini Bar 726 E Felix St St Joseph, MO 64501 7:00 pm	Fundraiser event at Fosters Martini Bar. Foundation President Larry Schildtknecht will be cutting his hair this evening. A $ 5.00 donation for a chance to cut a lock of hair. The hair will be donated to "Locks of Love", a program for children with cancer. Proceeds will go to the Foundation. Noise Blvd will be performing.

September 2008	September 18, 2008 - Marketing for Musicians Thursday, September 18, 2008 7:00 pm Cafe Acoustic 2605 Frederick St. Joseph, MO 816-671-1141	Featuring Jean Graeff, Director of Marketing Brand Strategy for VML Marketing Firm. Ms. Graeff will discuss various ways individual musicians, bands and artists can develop a higher identity in order to increase their public profile. The seminar will include discussion of identity development for artists and building specific tools to that end, including career assessment, potential actions and developing a higher presence on the web. Ms. Graeff, a professional writer, is a veteran of the television and radio industry and is one of the most respected brand developers in marketing. Her past projects have involved leading the branding campaigns for a number of international corporations including Coca Cola, Ford-Canada, Microsoft, AMC Theaters and Colgate. The seminar is free and open to the public.
	September 19, 2008 - Workshop Nick Charles Cafe Acoustic 2605 Frederick St. Joseph, MO 816-671-1141	Nick Charles will be presenting a workshop at Cafe Acoustic, Friday, September 19, 2008. The workshop is open to the public and admission is free. Donations will be accepted.
	September 20, 2008 - In Concert Nick Charles Tickets on sale now Benton Club Ballroom 402 N. 7th St. Joseph, MO. 816-232-6719	Australian born guitarist Nick Charles will be performing in St. Joseph, MO. on Saturday, September 20, 2008, 8:00 pm at the Benton Club Ballroom 402 N. 7th, St. Joseph, MO. Nick Charles has been a performing and touring acoustic musician for over 25 years on the Australian and international acoustic music scene. Averaging over 200 shows a year from Perth to Sydney and LA to Kansas City - including many major guitar, folk, blues and jazz festivals - the eclectic nature of Nick’s music continues to delight and captivate his audiences. Opening the show for Nick will be Marcus Words & Colby Walter and BJ Talley.

	November 20, 2007 - Master Class Thursday 7:00 p.m. Cafe Acoustic 2605 Frederick St. Joseph, MO 816-671-1141	The public is invited to a free Guitar Masterclass at Café Acoustic, 2605 Frederick Ave., Thursday, November 20, beginning at 7:30 PM, featuring Missouri Western guitar majors, the Brunette-Mayfield Guitar Duo, the St. Joseph Guitar Quartet and the St. Joseph Guitar Ensemble. Local guitarists are also invited to bring their guitars and receive a free coaching. All ages and musical styles are welcome. The Masterclass is co-sponsored by the St. Joseph Music Foundation and Café Acoustic and will be taught by Anthony Glise, who is the only guitarist to receive the Missouri Arts Council's award as "Individual Artist of the Year," presented at the State Capital by Governor Matt Blunt.

	Basic Electronics - Understanding Those Numbers	Just that - understanding basic electronics. Covers resistors, capacitors, power supplies, tubes, all types of cabling, MIDI, waveforms, synthesis, etc. Ever wonder what THD really is? Or IMD? Or Damping Factor? Or Slew Rate? How about Bridge Mono versus Parallel Mono? This seminar will look at equipment specifications and what they actually mean. With the amount of information to be presented, this will most certainly become a multi-part seminar.
	The Music Business - Part 3	A continuation of the November and April seminars. This seminar will cover such topics as copyrights, licensing, contracts and negotiations. 	Using Microsoft Office / Outlook	Take advantage of all the features of Microsoft Office to manage your music business. The focus will be on Outlook.
	The Internet, the Music and You	A look at P2P file sharing and why sharing copyrighted material using Kazaa, Limewire, Napster and similar services is illegal. Period.
	Instrument Repair and Maintenance	This seminar will cover repair and maintenance of instruments including keyboards, guitars, string instruments, woodwinds, brass and percussion. This seminar will last approximately 2 hours.
